The Earthquake

At 1:47 a.m. Sept. 21, 1999, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Taiwan. The most disastrous earthquake in the past century, the “Chi Chi Earthquake”, whose epicenter struck the town of Chi Chi in central Taiwan's Nantou County, killed more than 2,000 people and injured over 11,000 others. Nearly 110,000 homes were destroyed or damaged. Power outages and disruption of communication systems caused panic in general, but worse yet many families who were directly affected were struggling after their loved ones were buried in the rubble and their homes had collapsed.
