The killer earthquake changed the landscape in central Taiwan and severely damaged the tourism industry. Reconstruction work, with transportation, water and soil conservation, and rebuilding schools as priorities, were impressive as the tourism industry has seen its rebirth out of ashes and again picked up its role as a locomotive of regional economic development.
