10 Years after Taiwan's "921 Earthquake"
Commemorative Activities


In commemoration of the courage and strength of Taiwanese people in the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters to hit Taiwan this century, the government and private sector are holding a series of activities, including sponsoring seminars and discussions, producing feature films and publications, organizing tours to the reconstruction regions, and presenting concerts and gatherings. Following are a list of programs planned:

The National Science Council and academic institutions have been organizing 14 seminars:

(1) Seminar marking the 10th anniversary of the Chi Chi Earthquake – May 5-6, 2009 at Chung Cheng University in Chiayi

(2) International Academic Seminar – Sept. 17-19, 2009 at the International Convention Center of the Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei

(3) International Seminar on Disaster Emergency Management – Sept. 17-19, 2009 at the International Convention Center of the Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei

(4) International Seminar on Medical Services in Disasters – Sept. 17-19, 2009 at the International Convention Center of the Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei

(5) Land Dynamics in Mountainous Watersheds: Typhoons, Landslides, and Land Use – Sept. 17-19, 2009 at the International Convention Center of the Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei

(6) Seminar on Natural Disasters and Reconstruction in Taiwan -- Sept. 18-19, 2009 at the 921 Earthquake Reference Archive at Nantou County

(7) Cross-Taiwan Strait Seminar on Prevention and Rescue Actions in Natural Disasters – Sept. 21, 2009 at the Disaster Prevention Center at Chushan , Nantou County

(8) Seminar on Earthquake-induced Landslides – Sept. 21-24 at the Central University in Taoyuan

(9) Seminar on Community Reconstruction – Sept. 22, 2009 at the National Chi Nan University in Nantou County

(10) Seminar on renovation of historical sites – Sept. 22-23, 2009 at the National Chi Nan University in Nantou County

(11) Seminar and Symposium on Private Sector's Participation in Earthquake Reconstruction Works – Sept. 22-23, 2009 at the National Chi Nan University in Nantou County

(12) Seminar on the Impact of Earthquakes on the Ecological System – Sept. 21, 2009 at the Special Biological Research and Preservation Center in Nantou County

(13) Seminar on Special Rescue Measures of Pipelines and Power Transmission Facilities after Disasters – Sept. 22, 2009 at the 921 Earthquake Reference Archive at Nantou County

(14) Fourth International Forum on Natural Disasters – Sept. 29-30, 2009 in Taipei

Government Information Office is:

(1) Publishing a commemorative book, scheduled to be released before Sept. 20, 2009

(2) Producing a documentary, to be aired on the Discovery Channel on Sept. 20, 2009

(3) Entrusting local TV stations to produce and broadcast films featuring reconstruction work for TV stations

(4) Preparing special reports on commemorative activities to be printed on GIO periodicals

(5) Coordinating publicity regarding commemorative activities of all government agencies

The Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications is:

Organizing tours for the public to see the reconstruction sites and scenic spots in central Taiwan

The Hakka Affairs Commission is organizing:

A commemorative evening at the Tungshi Hakka Cultural Park, Tungshi, Taichung County featuring Hakka opera and a documentary of reconstruction stories

The Ministry of Education:

Four schools are selected each in northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan to present special exhibitions on disaster prevention.

The National Disaster Prevention and Protection Commission

Co-sponsoring the Cross-Taiwan Strait Seminar on Prevention and Rescue Actions in Natural Disasters on Sept. 21, 2009 at Chushan, Nantou County

Presenting special exhibition on disaster prevention at the Chushan training center of the National Fire Agency, Sept. 21, 2009

The Council for Cultural Affairs

Co-sponsoring a commemorative concert with the Relief Foundation at the Chung Hsing New Village on the evening of Sept. 20, 2009

Co-sponsoring a night vigil with the Hakka Affairs Commission at Tungshi , Taichung County on Sept. 20-21, 2009

Co-sponsoring a concert with the National Chi Nan University in Nantou County from 18:30 p.m. Sept. 20 till 1:50 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009

The Relief Foundation

Inviting volunteers who had participated in the rescue efforts to a reunion tour of the reconstruction sites Organizing a bicycle tour for rescuers from the military, international organizations, government agencies and volunteers to Taichung and Nantou counties.

Organizing a commemorative garden party at the 921 Earthquake Education Park at Wufeng, Taichung County from 11:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m., on Sept. 19 and 20, 2009
